I can't watch TV anymore. (Actually, it's been over three years since I've watched any television, if you don't count netflix. really. three years. and I have not missed it once.)
But lately I can't even watch movies anymore.
It's been ruined for me.
I feel old saying this, but I've seen every movie plot known to men at least 200 times over, and I'm only 28.
It's boring. It's repetitive. I'm tired of it. I need a break.
Thus, I no longer wish to participate in this leisure activity for awhile. Give me a book, or something, anything with depth. Something I can relate to that does not have snakes on a plane or someone being knocked up on a blind date or annoying small talk or unrealistic portrayals of marriage or life after college or teen pregnancy. Give me real people.
I think part of it is that I'm tired of being a consumer. I'm tired of consuming all this stuff that Hollywood and the media keep trying to throw at me. I feel like to them I'm just a pawn, just a little $$ sign. I think most things today are created not out of a genuine love of making, but out of a desire to get money, fame. I feel used by the system.
It's not enjoyable anymore.
I may watch a few movies here and there, but I think as a whole, I'm just done. Done.
What do you think? To be honest, I've never even lived in a house where I had access to cable, so I didn't grow up on TV to begin with--but lately just everything that's come out looks so SO boring. And redone. And oversexed.
For your indelible enjoyment, I have compiled a list of movies I have not yet seen (and won't be seeing). Read them and tell me I'm wrong. If you dare
- The second hobbit movie. Or even the third one.
- That sad movie about cancer and faulty stars. nope. not interested.
- What the heck ever transformer movie we are on now
- Anything with Captain-Southern-Accent and his boomerang shield
- Anything with the words "hot-tub" and "time machine" in it. What should I say? *fake voice* "Oh, yay, its another movie about men with a side of hot chicks! I can't wait to see it!" *rolls eyes* Please, tell me how this will edify my life.
- No thank you, I already know Heaven is for Real.
- I don't want to see Noah's Ark. I'm tired about hearing how either 1) awesome it is or 2) non-biblical it is. Can't we just see it as a movie, and be done with it?
- Why do we have a whole movie about a man's hunt to obtain a human penis for his penis collection? (yes that is actually a movie) WHAT?!?
- I still have not seen that musical Le Mis that everyone was raving about awhile ago. I own the book. I'm sure that's better, so I'll stick with that. Thanks.
- Anything where the main characters name is Honey booboo. I honestly think most people watch that out of pity for her. Or to realize their life really isn't that bad after all, because at least 3.5 million people don't watch you make a utter fool out of yourself and your daughter on a daily basis.

Hey now, I Captain America is so noble and has old fashioned values and he's fun. I think Angel and I and Captain America would get along well.
Have you already completed reading Les Mis? I haven't. I think the story is incredibly powerful--law vs. grace and all that....and I'm even an academic and love good writing and long books...I don't love the book. Maybe it's because I have to read it in translation...maybe it's just not my style of writing, because I do NOT love the book although I think the story is fascinating--i've seen the older version and the modern version. I do know people who love the book passionately, though.
Playing devil's advocate here--I notice you don't mention any thing about older movies. Do you dislike those too? Or do you not have much experience with them? Some people hate old movies simply because they're black and white...but girl, they had some AWESOME stories, lines, actors, characters. (in my little opinion)
I don't think the fact that I don't like Transformers or vulgar comedies means I don't like movies. I love movies--but I love movies that rely more on script, acting, and interesting characters than on CGI animation. Among my recommendation list (not all are black and white):

Tell Mr. Adventure to start finding better movies. Nobody enjoyed Hot Tub time machine. Haha! Or go on a short hike/walk instead of vegging out at the end of the day.
Deanna, I once had a classmate in a creative writing class tell me there were only 38 different plot ideas. I don't know where she came up with that number, but I thought there was definitely some validity to it!
Its' a Wonderful Life has the best "Real" character. His character always moves me and you have to see it in black and white, not in color :)
And I always have to agree with my wife that Les Mis. has an excellent example between law and grace.
Your animated comment reminded me that we just watched the second Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The storyline is kind of obvious (duh, the good guy's gonna win) but all the food puns make it worthwhile.

I agree with Rachel! There's a whole world of old movies out there. So many of them are clean and clever and awesome. :) My favorites are Singin' in the Rain, Casablanca, It Happened One Night, How To Steal a Million, and Charade. But I love almost anything starring Cary Grant or directed by Hitchcock or Frank Capra.
Kristin and Angela had a bunch of good recommendations, too! I've seen all the movies they mentioned as well. Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Gregory Peck are pretty much my top three lead actors! Humphrey Bogart's always interesting, too!
I hear you!! I rarely watch movies anymore, but we watch a little Netflix here and there. But I do have to echo Rachel that old movies are FANTASTIC. Singing in the Rain, anything by Hitchcock, oh and the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, of course :) But as a general rule, I'm with you on preferring books to movies!
